A total of four male narco-terrorists were killed, and no American forces were injured.” Background and Prior Strikes This announcement comes a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, vowing to escalate the military presence. Only on the previous day, US defense officials said it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela. Government Defends Tactics Amidst Scrutiny The government has faced growing pressure to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, officials have refused to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a success, saying it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is stretching the limits of legal military action. Although the administration has stated the operation is about stopping drugs destined for the US, remarks from a senior aide appeared to confirm a broader geopolitical objective. In a recent interview, the senior advisor said the president “aims to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president cries uncle.” This indicates the series of strikes may be linked to a strategy to oust Venezuela's current government.
