According to a police report obtained by BBC News, the anonymous individual shared 347 video excerpts of nude scenes in a Reddit group he managed, which were then watched 4.2 million-plus times. Danish authorities state he has been handed a seven-month suspended sentence for copyright infringement. Legal analysts explain the defendant was charged under a rarely-used clause in Denmark's intellectual property legislation, with the judge finding that by taking the footage out of their intended setting, the man had harmed the performers' "moral rights". He has also been convicted of sharing more than 25 terabytes of copyrighted data. From March 2022 to mid-2023, the user known as "the pseudonym KlammereFyr" on Reddit posted sexually explicit scenes including over 100 female performers. He shared them in the subreddit he was a moderator of. Per the Danish copyright protection group the Rights Alliance, his subreddit had more than 6,000 members and participants were encouraged to request excerpts of specific performers. In 2023, campaigners reported the incident to the authorities on behalf of the impacted artists, filmmakers and producers, which resulted in the subreddit being shut down. Andrea Vagn Jensen, among the actresses whose nude content were circulated in the group, told local media at the period she believed there was a difference between appearing naked in a film and appearing on Reddit. The actress stated the uploads amounted to "abuse". 'A significant message' The man was arrested in fall 2024 and pleaded guilty to the allegations last month. In a statement after the ruling, the head of the Rights Alliance the organization's leader said the outcome sent an "significant" message "that violations of artists' rights has repercussions". The ruling is viewed as unprecedented in the country for its application of the "moral rights" section of the national copyright law, which specifies an artist's work cannot be used in a way which infringes upon their standing. Intellectual property specialist Dr Alina Trapova told the media the case was "rare" for its emphasis on the harm to the integrity of an performer, rather than to them financially. The extent to which the ruling could affect nations abroad is unclear. But she added there may be "more and more of such cases" in the coming years with the growth of artificial intelligence, where "the integrity of an individual's creative output might be tempered with with greater ease".
