Physical Health or World Standing - Katie Boulter's Australian Open Dilemma

Britain's Katie Boulter admits she feels she has to "pick between my physical condition and my world standing" as the race continues for a position in January's Australian Open main event.

While the typical WTA Tour season is over, there are still standing points to be won in Chile, Argentina, multiple sites and European destinations.

The female competitor lineup for the opening Grand Slam of the forthcoming season will be calculated from the international positions of the December cutoff, which could cause a difficult choice for players near the cut.

Physical Setbacks

Former British top-ranked player Boulter tore an hip muscle in her concluding competition of the year in Asian venues last period, and is now weighing up whether to participate in the WTA 125 Challenger event in French locations, France, in the opening days of December.

The athlete's ongoing health concern, and the reality she would need to secure at least three matches in the European event to boost her position, means she may well end up not competing.

Contrasting Methods

In contrast, male athletes are not experiencing the same situation, as for the premier occasion the men's Australian Open competitor lineup will be created from present week's standings, which is the ATP's official annual-final ranking date.

The adjustment is designed to discouraging competitors from pursuing ranking points during what is essentially the off-season.

Coaching Changes

This period has been a challenging one for Boulter.

She won only 14 Tour-level main-draw games and recently parted ways with coach Biljana Veselinovic after a three-year partnership in which she won several WTA titles.

"Biljana is an incredible coach, and an extremely excellent person as well, which makes things extremely hard," Boulter said.

The pursuit for a different instructor is currently ongoing, seeking someone who has high-level experience as Boulter maintains the belief she can be a world-class competitor.

Career Objectives

"Progressing with a replacement instructor, an important factor I'm completely sure on is that they are going to be a professional who has considerable knowledge in how to advance to the very top level of this game," she said.

"I've been placed as advanced as 23 and I am confident I can climb back to that level. I am not convinced my standard has gone anywhere, I think the consistency needs to enhance.

"My objective is not simply to be ranked 50, forty, thirty, twenty - we've been there. The aim is to be within 20."
